The much-loved ‘Croc Swamp’ exhibit at Paignton Zoo in Devon reopened on Saturday, 18th January 2025, thanks to the support and collaboration of the local community. Westcountry Fabrication Ltd. is proud to have played a part in this project by providing a galvanised steel access platform and staircase.

Why Did Westcountry Fabrication Get Involved?

In July 2024, a Devon Chamber networking event hosted at Paignton Zoo led to our Director, Sam Hammond, meeting with Will Keen, the Zoo’s fundraising manager.

When I heard that the zoo might need steelwork to help reopen the crocodile exhibit, I was keen to do all that we could to make this happen,” says Sam Hammond.

What Did Westcountry Fabrication Do?

As steel fabricators, we were able to provide the fabrication and installation of a galvanised steel access platform and ramp, enabling safe public access to the enclosure. The project was managed by Paignton Zoo, with construction support from Dyson Construction.

Westcountry Fabrication Ltd. decided to donate our labour for the steelwork fabrication and installation, working closely with suppliers to ensure that materials were as competitively priced as possible to facilitate the reopening of Croc Swamp.

After finalising the design and plans with Paignton Zoo, our fabrication team worked on the structure through November 2024. Once fabricated, the steel was galvanised and delivered to the site, where our fitters braved challenging weather conditions to complete the installation, preparing it for cladding and finishing.

The Grand Opening

We were honoured to be invited to the grand opening of Croc Swamp on 18th January 2025 at Paignton Zoo. Our team, along with our families, took great pride in celebrating this special day with the Zoo and other visitors. Director Sam, Manager Jay, Foreman Neil, and Site Supervisor Steve all attended with their families.

Our families don’t often get to see our work—whether it’s on building sites, private properties, or steelwork hidden in the fabric of buildings—so this was a great opportunity to show them what we do,” says Jay.

We’re grateful to Paignton Zoo for recognising our contribution to the project in their opening speech, as well as for the plaque at the entrance to the exhibit and the fantastic videos shared on their social media.

This project was a real privilege to be part of. For many of us, Paignton Zoo holds a special place in our hearts. For me personally, having worked in the education department at the zoo early in my career, I have a deep appreciation for the role the Zoo plays in conservation, education, and fostering a love for wildlife!”Sam Hammond

The Future

No doubt the residents of Croc Swamp will be part of lasting memories for many visitors for years to come.
